As reported in the Peterborough Telegraph, an anti-slip, non-metal manhole cover has been installed on Church Street, Werrington Village, “….to help improve road safety and cut metal theft.”
According to the report:
"The Instarmac-manufactured covers come with a host of advantages, being safer for motorcyclists, quicker to install, more environmentally friendly and less likely to be stolen because they have no scrap value."
Commenting, local LIB DEM ward councillor, Darren Fower said:
“If it reduces crime, then this idea is good, but dare I say, if manhole cover theft is a big issue for the city, what are the police doing about it?
“As for the man hole covers being more environmentally friendly, how can they be? Any additional manufacturing creates additional pollution, and while metal can be melted down, many plastic cannot be?
“This latest initiative by the Council is at least a touch bizarre!”
